After stopping for fuel and THANKING the Oasis Roadhouse again for their help ..It's Cobbold Gorge ...Here we come. !!!!! we had booked onto a tour of the Gorge at 1:30 if we arrived on time. As we pull up the receptionist runs out ...Are you the Gibsons?? ( It's 1;33). Yep that's us...BUT first A Pee, more water and shoes. After 5 mins we hop onto a 4x4 bus and head out..( with four of us). .
Crossing River on Tour ... Wide dry river bed. Also water in some areas. Fresh water crocs are not dangerous apparently... ( I still want to know do they know THAT??)
We have been lucky all tours have only be a few people which is much better... The country is beautiful ..... We love the outback ... Cobbold Gorge is set on Robin Hood Station and of course access is by tour only. We go for a 45 min walk up and around the rivers creeks and boulders ending up on the escarpment looking down into the gorge......................
LUUUUUUUUUVLEY says J who is terrified of heights.
On Bush Walk...climbing up.
Crossing Creek on foot
Everyone runs over to the edge to look down ( we're walking on uneven rocks at this stage ..one trip and you are over!!!!) BUT not this little black duck.
I hang back and pray madly that B doesn't trip over the edge
as he takes photos of the crocs. Guide says "Come on LUV..
B's photo of 2 crocs on rocks from above!!
...
I'll hold you".. LUV says "NO THANKS... Ill just wait over here"...... 50 mtrs back.......
We then walk down to the edge of creek and onto the flat bottom boat propelled by a battery motor.. Sooooo quiet as we "glide" across the water. I looked UP at the escarpment.... MUCH BETTER!!!!!
Cobbold Gorge looking UP & through!!!!!!!
"Harmless Salt Water Crocs"..Yeah Right!!! Maybe they are LESS agressive but I was not about to "test the water so to speak???"
Light on the other side ...sooo peaceful gliding along..
Camping was great here Good amenities ...and picturesque sites. We went for a walk with Jean travelling by herself.. 70-75 yrs old . Travels all over the Outback... all the little obtuse places by herself!!!! Go Girl!!!!
Next day we go touring on Robin Hood Station. Just B &; I... with the guide.
We were interested in how they run the property. Today there are 4 sons and the property has been unofficially divided between them as they all had different ideas. They all run cattle but also have other enterprises as well like contract fencing and tourisim. Tourism brings in 0ver 50% of the income ( no surprise there!!!). They make $20.60 per head on their own cattle and $60.00 per head on aggisted cattle... Simon ( Tourist Brother) has laid Ks and Ks of piping for with cattle troughs strategically placed at the corners of paddocks so one can water 3 paddocks!!!!
Cattle learn to rub under this rope as it is an insecticide (sort of). It keeps the "Fly" and insects from the stock.. (R) Robin Hood station as far as the eye can see..
Cattle in a research program to check what the feed is lacking and how to supplement. And of course the Prize Braham Bull
Morning tea at the Barramundi Lake ( Cultivated not natural)
Walkabout weed... Horses eat it and forget to eat but continue to walk until they drop..deadly. This has sees on it but there is another with a yellow flower Below is our "chariot" and guide for the morning.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and enjoyed learning about Station Life... The landscape continues to change as does the vegetation. It is never boring for us. I think we maybe settling into travels????
Fantastic photos in the gorge! Nice going, Barry. Love those freshies. Hey, we hear you have a new PM. We were there to welcome Kevin Rudd, but evidently the bloom fell off the rose (well, poor Barack Obama is having his trials, too).
